In all Honesty...

Post by Dragon555 on Thu Dec 01, 2016 10:50 pm

I feel like people don't have much variety when it comes to pokemon choices and its like a main handful are played, like Lucarios, Eevees, Gardevoirs, and Eeveeloutions are RP'ed as too much, i mean there are seriously 700+ Pokemon, and most of the community chooses those pokemon because they seem like you can easily fit in or they match the type of pokemon your OC is going for Exactly. So thats why people choose them, but I think there needs to be MUCH more Variety in what we choose, and what the pokemon looks like Doesn't have to be what traits they have, It would be nice to see something like... a Friendly Palossand, or a Rude, Bastardly Bounsweet, or even a Unloved Sandshrew, Just more Variety!
Then Again, This is just me and my Opinions. Feel free to talk below about what I say

People should never RP as something they do not feel comfortable with or do not want to RP as. Yes, the popular pokemon are going to have a lot of people using them and that is okay. It's better for people to rp as what they enjoy rping as over forcing themselves to rp as a Pokemon they don't want to roleplay as for the sake of 'variety'. I myself have quite a few OCs of 'overused' pokemon. (There is actually a running joke about the massive amount of Zoroark OCs I have) and personally I could care less if every species in an rp was the same one. If it is what people like then they should go for it. This place is to enjoy yourself, and as long as you stay within the rules you should be completely free to RP as what species you feel comfortable with or love the most without the fear of being chastised for it.

That part is not targeted towards you in specific, it is more targeted towards those who go (Ew you're a Lucario that is so overused/Ugh you are one of those edgy Eevee users etc). Those people are elitist and basically assholes. You yourself put this down as more of a suggestion, I just very strongly disagree with it.

I agree with Ryan completely, and just to add my own two cents: Just because something is played often does not mean you cannot have something unique. I have a Sylveon OC myself and I always try to make my characters distinct in some way.

If you personally believe that just because someone is playing as a Gardevoir, you can't interact with them, then don't. As long as you are not forcing your opinion on other people, it's fine. Just keep in mind that the best way to inspire others is to do something yourself.

As a Gardevoir myself, species doesn't matter too much. It's if you decide to go with the crowd and fit into a usually specific 'type' of OC at which point I find it not-fun to RP with someone. Species shouldn't really matter. It's a pokemon you like. Now put your character on it.

What really matters is if the character themselves are two-dimensional, not if the species is overused.

I personally don't mind if I see a lot of the same species within an RP. I think it actually opens up a lot of opportunity to interact with them and see how different a character can be.
Heck, even that FR I did so long ago where Midna was swarmed by Eevee; that was fun and interesting.

If people are comfortable with what they RP as, then I think it's fine.

I think the amount of Ninetales are starting to get up there too, and I've seen an increase in Mimikyu as well.

If the person isn't breaking the rules, then I think they should be able to play as whomever they like. Smile

Creativity is good in character creation (it makes people more interesting to RP with, after all), but most of the time the specific species of an OC... Won't do that much. Sure, a humanoid will probably act more, well, human than a dog, but past that the differences between a Machamp and a Gardevoir, an Eevee and a Growlithe, or a Lucario and an Aggron will probably be minimal-to-nonexistent. Because of this, I put little credence in species when judging an OC's creativity or originality, and even less when judging overall quality. So in the end, I don't believe there's anything wrong whatsoever with playing a Pokemon that's popular. After all, they're popular for a reason, that usually being, say, an interesting design or cool lore (both of which give you more to work with when making an OC).
